Glossary Detention

Detention refers to the charges incurred when a carrier or transportation provider holds logistics equipment, such as containers or trailers, for longer than the agreed-upon time. It is a fee that the transportation provider charges to compensate for the equipment's delay and to cover the costs of the idle equipment. Detention charges are calculated based on a daily rate and can be quite expensive, depending on the length of the delay and the type of equipment.
